On Thursday, November 14, 2024, we celebrated Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. This Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day brought students, families, and the community together in honor of Ruby Bridges’ courageous role in the fight against racism and her legacy of hope and resilience.
Students and families were invited to walk to school as a way to honor Ruby’s historic journey as the first African American student to integrate an all-white school in Louisiana in 1960. This symbolic walk reflected Ruby’s bravery and encouraged students and families to engage in meaningful conversations about racism and equity.
In collaboration with Commute Options, families participated in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School event, featuring two gathering points in Bend. Each location served as a launchpad for learning and reflection, as community leaders shared stories about Ruby’s impact on civil rights.
Ruby Bridges Day was a movement of learning, unity, and purpose. By walking in Ruby’s honor, the school communities made a bold statement about their dedication to creating an environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. This celebration reminds us all of the power of small steps and how they can spark change.
